A rather annoying fact is that November heralds about three or four really decent film festival's every year! I wish the organisers would look at the schedule and try and spread the dates out!! As a result every year I am stuck which one to go to left scratching my head as to which one would be best to go to. The most regular festival I attend mainly because it's on my back door is Flip festival at the light house Wolverhampton .I attend pretty much every year I have been going pretty much since the first year Flip launched and true to form I will be showing my face again this year.
However good Flip is and trust me it's worth a look people it doesn't disguise that there is other festival's that have a bigger budget and reach out to a wider crowd. One such festival is Animated Encounters in Bristol at the watershed my first experience of this was back in 2005 as a second year university student. I was really impressed with the quality of the Animation and the speakers and the generally set up to be honest. If I ever had to move anywhere animation work wise in the UK Bristol would be my preferred destination I like the place very much.
Back in 2008 I thought I would re-visit Bristol and again I wasn't disappointed I met two students who were promoting their short film Khoda. I had seen this about two weeks previous at Flip and was wowed by the quality of the imagery and animation truly a well executed film. I am still in touch with these two today I also befriended the chairman of shooting people James Mulligan, Mick Foley, Claire Kitson and many other people within the industry despite me being a one man band and new I was made to feel very welcome and it was nice to be a part of the scene. At the time I was working on a film 21st Century Boy which I finished late last year(2009) I thought to myself what's the harm in trying the festival circuit? So sure enough this year I have spent a lot of my time researching different festivals and putting my film forward for them. And Bristol came back with what I can only describe as a win on my part although my film was not selected to be a main part of the festival it is available to view in the festival's digital library!!! So for the first time in two years I return to Bristol this time to promote myself, the services I offer and my film I'm excited and quite looking forward to going I have brought a delegate pass and I plan to make the most of this experience. If any of you are going I look forward to seeing you there please come and say hello. I will update you all on how Animated Encounters 2010 goes good or bad.
Regards Tom
